Sarah from Fibulator is so sweet... (postcard, received 8-22)Nick -
Richmond is everywhere. I lent the zine to my friend Jose from Richmond and he was pretty happy. I am preparing for my trip to E. Europe by reading Cometbus #36. Yesterday was that cold first reminder that fall is coming day. I took 2 baths. What to take is what I think about now mentally pairing clothes and the pros and cons of this and that guessing at unforseeable circumstances. It's been 2 years since I've been gone from Oakland. But perhaps to be gone for just 4 weeks doesn't even qualify for goneness. Anyway I'm meeting Lexa! Yeah Lexa! She's been gone soo long. I plan to bathe in Budapest in hot steam baths and then just see where else to go. You start to teach again, no? I'm very much liking getting JM. More.
Love, Sarah
It goes without saying that Sarah is not only my first real subscriber, but a powerhouse person to boot. Find out more about her and the dearly departed Fibulator in interviews, and about the new JM (1.5) if the mood strikes ya.
Letters don't get much nicer than this...Date: Mon, Aug 12, 1996 8:13 PM EDT

Wow. The coolest thing about "JunkMagnet" (even over and above the BUTCM review, which I continue to wear like a badge of honor) is its interesting deconstructionist/anti-structural approach to zinemaking. This probably sounds a little bit overintellectual, but I find it really interesting how you will work out a theme in a new way, or in a way other than the classic lengthy rant/essay format that a lot of zines (mine included, one of the reasons I stopped writing it) have sort of driven into the ground. Your text/picture mix is a much more evocative and powerful means for expressing what a zine does best: explaining how one person feels about something to another.
My favorite line? "Who wants to eat when you can watch people eat on TV?"
Cool cover, too.
S.If you're wondering, he's referring to my print work.... once again, check out JM products for more info.
[Cometbus] is one of my favorite things, period, so this letter means the world to me.... (letter, postmarked 10-16, from Reno, NV)Dear Nick,
I wasn't going to write you because I planned on running into you tonight (Sun.) at the Infoshop. Guess you didn't stay around for the dinner. I used to go every Sunday night but in January I started a new band project with rehearsals every Sunday night, so I have been missing from the Infoshop about as long as you have been volunteering there. Anyway, the food tonight was incredible.
I loved the issue you sent. The familiar places to me, and unashamed sentementality. Acutally half completely familar places, half completely unfamiliar. Ever since living in + discovering Richmond, Virginia I've had total guilt about now knowing the Richmond in my backyard. It is weird how little I hear about Richmond, how few people I've ever met from there. Funny especially now that El Cerrito + Richmond Annex are becoming the new yuppie suburbs. Your mag is comforting in its confirmation of my memories of E.C. as a very intolerant (and interesting) place, and the weird nostalgic longing for that again. I love the way people only appear as flashes, shadows, mistakes, in the way of your photos.
You should try to sell J.M. for less, it would sell much more I think. There are many ways to scam the copies. I can't believe you teach at King + Mr. Freeman is your dad. Ah, all my past is coming back in strange ways lately. Thanks so much for the kind words right when I need them. Leaving for 2 months. Talk when I return.
X Aaron
I haven't actually met Aaron Cometbus yet, but thanks to Darby [Ben is Dead] and the strange hand-waivings of fate, I'm sure I will someday soon. Receiving this letter, and the one that preceeded it, totally made the whole JM project worthwhile, and it goes without saying that [Cometbus] #38 - available here and there right this instant - is a mighty fine issue indeed.

Just a quick note to say that I found Antizine 10 to be a quite wonderful read, as always of course. Poignant and beautifully stark, you make me remember emotions I had long ago forgotten about. Yrs is definitely my favorite zine on the net.
Much Love,
Jenantizine, of course, is this story I'm working on... new issue available now, just for you.
