Smashing Pumpkins Keyboardist Dies

When Aimee called me up, and told me that a member from Smashing Pumpkins died, I thought for sure it was their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin. He's had drug problems himself. I turned on MTV and found out that it wasn't him. It was their keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin, 34. He died from a heroin overdose, and was found dead in his apartment in New York City. Jimmy was with Melvoin when he OD'ed, and had tried to revive him. The Pumpkins canceled all their tour dates through July 27th, after Jimmy was arrested. The entire band was questioned, and when they left Jimmy was still inside. He was charged with a misdemeanor, possession of a controlled substance. Melvoin left behind a wife and 3 month old son. The Pumpkins annouced that they were kicking Jimmy out of the band, because of his drug use, and are searching for a new drummer. Can you believe it?!?!

Isn't it just sick how many people are doing heroin now??? Kurt, Courtney, Scott Weiland, and now this poor guy too. Of course MTV took advantage of this, to bring up the whole issue again. I think they should talk about it, but why does someone else have to die, for people to realize what a problem it is?

[Are You With Me?], By Cowboy Mouth

This New Orleans band has been called a fusion of country, rock, rhythm and blues with a touch of Cajun, and the intensity of punk. They've also been described as a strange amalgamation of the Neville Brothers, The Sex Pistols, John Prine and jawbox. Whatever you call them, their new CD, the band's major-label debut on MCA Records, is a got-to-have-it collection of 12 toe-tappin', rip-roarin' songs.

"Jenny Says", the album's opener, is a deceptively catchy tune with a dark side apparent after a few listens. Guys who have girl problems are especially going to love this album. Take the lyrics to "Love of My Life", for instance: "the love of my life is a shady lady, tearing me up just to bring me down. She used to be calm, but now she's crazy. I don't mind. She's not the love of my like anymore."

Cowboy Mouth's music is reminiscent of Southern rock groups such as the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker band, and Lynard Skynard, with a liberal measure of fuk and New Orleans blues thrown in for good measure. But make no mistake about it-- Cowboy Mouth's sound is all it's own. This is one CD that you've just got to give a listen to. A definite "10".

[Seven]

This movie was really good. I'm not really a big Brad Pitt fan, but this was definately worth renting. It's about a couple of cops that are after a strange psycho, who commits murders about the seven deadly sins. The movie has some gross parts, and one really cool gross part, but I won't tell you what it is. This guy is so loony he peels of the tips of his fingers so he won't have any finger prints in his apartment. I guess he's obsessed with the bible, and want's people to remember what he did forever. There's a nice twist at the end that makes it a little confusing, but this was a great movie. I give it a 9.

Advice Column

Well there's good news. I got some more advice questions, after a little bit of begging. Now all I need is some people to respond (hint, hint) with their advice.

1. How do you know when a relationship is really over?? When is it time to cut the cords and move on??

2. I am going into high school this year and I am sorts fine with it, but there are some people there that I just know are going to harrass me all day long! How do I look forward to high school instead of being nervous???

JunkMagnet's Web Page

Guess what? JunkMagnet (Nick) offered me some space on his new web page, for Shiny Black rainbows. Of course I said that would be wonderful, because I'd have to be stupid not to. That was a very nice thing to do, because he did all the formatting and everything. It's very exciting. Anyway, issues 3 and 4 are there right now, so that's pretty cool. His web site will include Antizine (If you haven't read this, read it now! It's a story he's writing, that he sends out in chapters. Very good), [Things], [Thoughts], [People], [Places], and [Mail]. There's also going to be [Sounds], and a review section. It will be fully functional on August 1st. Antizine 10 should be ready by then too, for those of you that already read it. You guys should go check it out, because he has lot's of cool stuff going on in it.

I got lots of replies on the last survey and tallied them all up, so here they are:

1. What do you think of Courtney Love???

Two people said they didn't care, and three people said they didn't like her. Everybody else (there was a whole lot) said they liked her or thought she was cool. That was nice, it looks like there's a lot of Hole fans out there.

Five people said they were cool, and don't sound like Nirvana. Six people said they were both, or they didn't care. And the rest (20 something) said they were either wannabes or they just didn't like them.

Lots of people didn't understand this question. By clean I meant, not dirty. People that are sort of obsessive about it (sort of like me, but not really). Anyway, most people said it was a matter of personal choice. Or that it was boring, but didn't really matter.

The average number was 5 zines, but some people (like myself) get more than 20.

There are so many people that play the guitar! That one had the most, but Piano, keyboard, bass, mandolin (What??), flute, violin, drums, alto sax, and clarinet were also mentioned. About five people said no they don't play anything, and 4 others sing.

9. Are you a cheerleader or do you show large amounts of school spirit??

Every single person said no, except one!! That's so funny.
