One of my all-time favorite bands, Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura sing up a cute storm backed by the most Beatles-esque tracks that Tamio Okuda (among others) has ever come up with.
Besides their many excellent albums, and remix and best of collections, there's also a great two-disk set where they go it alone, [solosolo].
They're so cool that they've even had their own kids TV show (Papapapa Puffy), Playstation video game, collectible dolls, and videotaped tour of the US, but not until SXSW 2000 did anyone in the mainstream really notice their brilliance.
One of their newer albums, [Spike], is a very solid effort which rocks harder than earlier releases. Tamio Okuda is all over the place (which is as it should be), and Andy Sturmer, the "godfather" of Puffy, even stops by for three fine tracks. My favorite songs are [Sumire], [Destruction Pancake] (which sounds like Picasso Trigger of all things), the [Suisui] duo (the same song presented in two widely varied ways), [Akai Ringo], [Umi E To] (Okuda at his finest) and [Puffy no Rule] (a weirdly endearing rocker with a killer chorus). Overall, it's not as varied as [Fever*Fever], but in many ways that's a good thing. I recommend it.
Over the past few years Puffy have become much more well known in the US, thanks in large part to select CD releases and Cartoon Network. In fact, they have a new Puffy inspired cartoon series that started recently; check out PuffyAmiYumi.com for more details. It's far from the classical Rodney Puffy, but I'll refrain judgement until I see [Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi].

If you don't already have a Puffy best-of album, this is the one to get, if for no other reason than it's available in North America.
Oh! My! God! By all means, I hope you took advantage and experienced Puffy proper.

If you like covers of old Japanese hits, then baby you better call the taxi twice. I haven't bought this album yet because I'm so terribly slow on the uptake, but I bet it sounds swell.

It's a cover song, produced by Tamio Okuda. Enough Said? Well, looks like their upcoming album will also be all covers, so take this as a taste of what's to come. Go here for clips and such.

[Spike] has been officially released in the U.S. as of around 5.1.2001! Due to the idiotic Puffy Combs, they'll be marketed under the name of "Puffy AmiYumi". You can check out their brand new English website at www.puffyamiyumi.com.
The track listing is identical to the Japanese release, with two bonus tracks. Yes, the songs that were in Japanese, still are in Japanese, so for those wanting the purely authentic Puffy experience, here you go.
I was finally able to find the CD, from Amazon.com, even though it was mislabeled in their system as [Spike] (import) with the wrong publication date. Just look for the cheapest version (probably $13.95), with all the tracks listed in English, and there you go. The cover and art direction looks like crap compared to the Japanese version, but the music is still pure, sweet, wonderful Puffy.
