Marbles, [Go Marilee b/w Grant Me The Day] (7"), Elephant 6

Like a big bag of. "Go Marilee" is 2:35 of Elephant 6-esque Robert Schneider Apples pie solo dixie cups, and it goes without saying that it makes me ride buses all day and night. Jingle-jangle jumprope joy with toy drums and Casio and bells and guitars and singing and "Grant Me The Day" on the flip, which fluffy kittens often tell me is suitable for framing. I hear melodica? It's like angels floating down from heaven, eating all of my red vines, and then doing the strobe light pillow fight thing (thanks to Becca). Super-duper sweetness.

Menthol, [Menthol], Capitol

Huh (forwards and back)? You know, it's like flavored rice cracker pucks - get to the point, why am I chewing? "Francis Scott Key" is eccentrically splendid in a terribly annoying way (smooooth yuckiness). Pavement as a metal band gone modrock because that's the finger-snappiest neo-slack Scooby Doo thing, dude. The lyrics make me build popsicle stick skyscrapers, only to be spat upon by the other me as King Kong, you know, the remake of the remake? They can't be serious, so I like this yet don't touch that for all of our sakes! Sheesh! Chime on, I'm lost.

Matthew Hattie Hein, [Last Chance] (7"), Ross

A New Bad Things' new good thing, in a pro-acoustic presentation. Slow yet lyrically dense enough that words like "I'll never learn 'cause there's nothing to learn" make up for the endearing "looseness" (which some people could term lo-fi-sloppy stuff, but not me at all - tiny mistakes and giggles only make me come back for more). Actually, when it comes down to the analycritic in me this is pretty darned melancholy, but all you have to do is think New Badly, and subtract everything but the singer, then add some medium-strength guitar: Non-prescription action, Jackson.

The Minders, [The Minders] (7"), Elephant 6

Elephant 6 stampede, on ice! M. Leaper, the singer / songwriter / amazing fellow in question, is the new psychadelfellow (without the bitter aftertaste) and since Robert Schneider produced and engineered and loved this to pieces, case closed. "Build" is pretty jaded lyrically (construction isn't cool!) but sonically it's like rolling around in early morning dew, only with more jangle and harmonious content than M. Nature usually provides. "Almost Aims" totally hits the target, with hand-clapping and that sort of lyrical and vocal action that is (gulp) Neo-Beatles, and "Chatty Patty" is mean and sweet and weird and wonderful and...

Modest Mouse, [Modest Mouse] (7"), Sub Pop

Hell yeah! embossed. The trio from Issaquah, WA isn't a Sub Pop dud bub, they're Up in all the right ways. "Broke" is a 50 mile bicycle ride just to eat some purple plums, not to mention never killing any small insects again because it's wrong with a state capitol. "Whenever I Breathe Out You Breathe In Positive Negative" isn't as grand as mostly everything outta Mouse central, but at the same time it's a 50 mile trail of ants leading to Baskin Robbins, and the scoopaholics step aside and let the little brown ones lick. Embossed yeah, hello world.

Modest Mouse, [This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About], Up

All the way to "Ohio", baybee. Drive By Jehu greetings from the great highway, the 3 Rocketeers have blasted off sideways up past the radio towers. Scratch and sniffle ball deep thought, as you throw pebbles at the waterfall, trees, and everything else that moves yet does not eat cereal. Jeanelvis knows, as do I, that major Modest Mouse skywriting will occur spontaneously as "Head South" heads west, over waves, and creates a new island chain. There, all I need is a copy machine, clear tape, scissors, lots of black pens, pencils plus sharpener, and this record as Kewl-aid.
